Blueberry Picking Fun
My husband often jokes how he finds it funny people pay to do manual labor. He clearly didn’t go fruit picking until he met me, ha. I have always loved this, though. Now that I have kids, I enjoy taking them as well. We typically do strawberry picking in June, blueberry picking in July and apple/pumpkin picking in September/October (depending on how the season is going).
This year was a little different due to covid, so we didn’t make it out strawberry picking in June. We did make it out blueberry picking in July and it was fantastic. The blueberries were huge and perfectly ripe. Everyone wore masks and social distancing was practiced (never more than 1 group in a row) when we went. My kids actually don’t like blueberries but they do enjoy picking them. It’s something I have great memories doing as a kid and I’m loving making these memories with my kids now too. It’s a simple tradition that I hope they carry on as well.
I was a bit worried at first because they wouldn’t let all four of us out in the area unless we bought the bucket. I didn’t think we could use all of them! But we did! I made a blueberry pie, snacked on a ton of them and made lots of blueberry pancakes. Those ended up being the highlight for me. The blueberries were so big but firm; they held their shape while cooking and would burst when taking a bite. They were perfection.
I used my Simple Pancake recipe and made no changes other than folding in a whole lot of blueberries and cooking them in melted butter.
Do you like adding fruit to pancakes? Do you and/or your family enjoy fruit picking?
If you find yourself with a bunch of blueberries that need to be used, I hope you try out my recipe!
