Resources – Tools/Looms

When starting out weaving, I used a small lap loom. It was nothing fancy, but it did the trick. There are so many different types and styles.

There are adjustable looms, looms with stands, etc. Which one is right for you? That will depend. I have always preferred a lap loom. One, because of space. I don’t have a ton of space to store weaving supplies. I find that a lap loom can be easily tucked away. Second, I can use it anywhere. It is very portable so I can bring it to the park and use while my kids play or I can sit in bed and use it.

Here are some of my recommendations for if you are just starting out and wanting to try weaving.

This is my very first loom kit that I bought. It comes with everything you will need to make a woven wall hanging. There are couple size options and color palettes to choose from. The fibers are high quality. The chunky yarn is beautiful. Even after I ran out, I ordered more of their chunky yarn to use for other projects.

You really can’t go wrong with National Geographic. Yes, this is advertised as a kids weaving kit, but really anyone could use this. This kit comes with everything you need to create a weaving and the price is great at under $25.

This is a top choice on Amazon. It does not come with yarn, but it comes with all of the tools you will need and two different sized looms.

If you are looking for a larger loom with stands, this is a great budget option. It does not come with yarns.

If you want to spend a little more, Beka Looms are very popular. They are also very good for space saving because they easily come apart. There is a little learning curve and can be tricky to get the tension of the warp just right, in my opinion. They are a solid option, especially if you prefer products that are made in the US.

Perhaps an unpopular opinion – I do not love most wooden tapestry needles. Regardless of price point. I find them to be just too clunky. It also bothers me how warp thread rubs against it, I worry it will tear/weaken it. Here are some needles that I personally love for weaving. They are very affordable and well worth it.

I really hope my recommendations are helpful if you are just starting off. I would love to hear your feedback!
